Lower Phase Education at Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA
At Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA, the Lower School (Forms 1 to 3) provides students with a strong academic, personal and social foundation that prepares them for future success in the IGCSE and International Baccalaureate programmes. Guided by the school's commitment to developing responsible global citizens, the Lower School combines academic excellence with character development, service learning, leadership and outdoor education.
The Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum is offered, leading seamlessly into the IGCSE curriculum offered in Forms 4 & 5. The Lower Secondary curriculum is broad and balanced, ensuring that students build strong foundations in key subjects while developing effective study habits, independence and confidence. Students learn within mixed-ability classes and are supported by dedicated tutors who oversee their academic and personal growth.
During Forms 1 and 2, students are supported as they transition into secondary education. These are formative years, offering the wide range of traditional High School subjects. In Form 3, students begin to make subject choices that reflect their interests and strengths. Options are introduced in areas such as the Creative Arts and Languages, allowing learners to develop their individual talents while continuing to receive a well-rounded education. Mathematics pathways are also differentiated to challenge and support students appropriately.
A distinctive feature of the Lower School experience is the Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) programme. Through age-appropriate learning experiences, students explore service, sustainability, environmental stewardship, ethics, justice and responsible citizenship. These experiences encourage students to engage with real-world challenges, develop empathy, and become active contributors to their communities. The programme reflects both the values of the United World Colleges movement and Waterford Kamhlaba's longstanding commitment to service and social responsibility.
The Nyatsela Journey
The culmination of the Lower School experience is the renowned Nyatsela Journey, undertaken by all Form 3 students. "Nyatsela," a siSwati word meaning "to make a footprint" or "to set foot," is a transformative outdoor learning expedition that has become a hallmark of a Waterford education. During this challenging journey, students spend approximately two weeks walking through the diverse landscapes of Eswatini. Working in small groups and accompanied by experienced staff, students hike between 5 and 15 kilometres each day, carrying all their essential belongings in their backpacks. Along the way, they camp, stay in local communities, prepare their own meals, wash their own clothes and learn to live simply and sustainably.
Nyatsela is far more than an outdoor adventure. It is a powerful rite of passage designed to develop resilience, independence, teamwork, leadership and self-awareness. Students learn to navigate challenges, support one another, build meaningful relationships and deepen their appreciation for nature and community. Through shared experiences and reflection, they discover strengths they may never have realised they possessed. The journey embodies Waterford Kamhlaba's educational philosophy that some of life's most important lessons are learned beyond the classroom. By the time students return from Nyatsela, they have not only traversed the beautiful landscapes of Eswatini but have also embarked on a profound journey of personal growth and discovery. They return stronger, more confident, and better prepared for the academic and personal challenges that lie ahead.
In this way, the Lower School at Waterford Kamhlaba provides an exceptional balance of academic learning, service, personal development and experiential education, ensuring that every student is equipped to make a positive impact in their communities and in the wider world.
