Our Students, Our Voice: The Student Representative Council

The Student Representative Council (SRC) of Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa exists as the official representative body of the student community. At its core, the SRC serves as a bridge between students, staff, and school leadership, ensuring that student voices, concerns, ideas, and experiences are heard, represented, and acted upon constructively within the school community.The SRC is founded on the belief that students should not simply exist within the school environment, but should actively contribute toward shaping it.

 Through representation, advocacy, collaboration, and leadership, the SRC works to strengthen student welfare, improve communication, foster inclusion, and create a more connected and engaged school culture.The Council is currently led by three Joint Presidents (currently Nigel, Samantha, and Linda), working collaboratively alongside constituency representatives and the wider Executive Committee. Together, the SRC operates through nine constituencies representing different aspects of student life:

● Academics: supporting communication between students and academic leadership while advocating for healthy and constructive learning environments;

● Activities: organizing socials, events, and initiatives that strengthen student engagement and school spirit;

● Day Students: representing and supporting the experiences and inclusion of day students within the wider school community;

● Environmental: promoting sustainability, environmental awareness, and long-term climate-conscious initiatives on campus;
● Food: gathering student feedback on catering and working to improve dining experiences and food quality;
● Hostels: supporting boarding student welfare and addressing concerns relating to residential life;
● Information Technology: assisting with communication surrounding technology systems, internet access, and digital support on campus;
● Pastoral: advocating for student well-being, mental health awareness, and inclusive support structures;
● Sports: supporting athletes, sports culture, tournaments, and student participation in recreational activities.Beyond events and representation, the SRC plays an important role in creating opportunities for students to participate meaningfully in school life and leadership. It provides students with a platform to raise concerns, propose ideas, and engage with decision-making processes that affect the wider community. As student Ryan Chigudu explains:

        “The SRC is important because it improves student welfare and gives students a real opportunity to be involved in decision-making processes within the                   school community.”

The SRC continues to serve as an important part of the Waterford Kamhlaba community by promoting communication, accountability, leadership, and student voice. Through collaboration with students, management, staff, clubs, and organizations, the Council strives to ensure that every student feels represented, heard, and valued within the school environment. At its heart, the SRC is built around one central belief: our students matter, and their voices deserve to shape the community they are part of.
