Latest Stories - UWC Day 2022 was a Great Success!
On Saturday 2 April 2022 Waterford
held UWC Day 2022, a day that remains the pride of the school since it is
mainly about the celebration of diversity at WK, something that is at the heart
of the UWC movement.
It was refreshing and exciting to
see the community come together dressed in different national attires to
celebrate the diversity of cultures and nationalities represented at Waterford
Kamhlaba. During UWC Day, the Waterford Kamhlaba family shares a little bit of
“home” with the rest of the school. The event started with an assembly that
featured a Parade of Nations where students represented their own countries in
their traditional attires, greeting the rest of the school in their home
language.
There were great performances including
poems, songs and dances. After the opening assembly participants visited student-led
food stalls that had food from around the world. Meanwhile, performances continued
outside the school’s cafeteria. UWC Day reminds us that it is possible to keep
and celebrate our identity and avoid losing a sense of who we are even in the
context of diversity of cultures. This is what makes a UWC education unique -
when young people come together from different parts of the world they never
lose who they are; at the same time, they learn from fellow colleagues who come
from other parts of the world, with different cultures to theirs.
