Latest Stories - Waterford Kamhlaba’s Inaugural Education Symposium a Huge Success!
On Saturday 26 March 2022
Waterford Kamhlaba brought together the government and all education
stakeholders in Eswatini to discuss the future of education through an
Education Symposium, under the UNESCO International Day of Education's 2022
theme: “Changing Course, Transforming
Education.”
The Waterford Symposium on
Education had used this theme to begin a discussion around how to work together
with the government and non-government agencies in Eswatini, to realize the
fundamental right to education for everyone. The school also used this day to
showcase and share some of the work it is doing as well as to engage in
meaningful discussion around respective roles in realizing the UNESCO goal of
transforming education by changing course.
Since 1963, Waterford’s aim has
always been to use education as a transformative endeavour for both learners
and teachers, leaders in education and those who work, in whatever capacity,
with young minds.
During the symposium, discussions
focused on what may be required in Eswatini's education systems, to better
engage students in the kind of transformational educational practices that
build a sustainable, peaceful future and so that each individual also discovers
their purpose in building the future.
During the official opening, on
behalf of the Minister for Education, the Under Secretary (Schools Manager) in
the Ministry of Education and Training Lungelo Nhlengetfwa encouraged all
participants to take advantage of the opportunity and thanked Waterford
Kamhlaba for her contribution to the future of education in Eswatini. He
mentioned that it was His Majesty King Mswati III and the government’s vision
to see young people trained and education used as a tool for economic
development, hence the opportunity availed by Waterford was in line with the
aspirations and goals of the government.
The keynote speech was delivered
by Waterford alumna Linda Zwane (WK ’99) who works at Standard Bank Eswatini as
Head of Data and Analytics. She emphasized that it was important to pay
attention to the needs of teachers who are the people that deliver education to
Emaswati. Waterford Kamhlaba Chair of Governing Council Dr. Sibongile Gumbi
thanked everyone for coming and assured the government and all stakeholders
that Waterford will continue with this discussion and encouraged all
stakeholders to continue engaging and to also do something about the
deliberations that came out of this year’s symposium.
