Growing up in a business family introduced me to this career that I grew to love. My mother was working in the financial sector and my father had businesses around the country which are still trading today. My parents’ passion and success in business inspired me to pursue a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degrees in Business Administration at Tennessee State University.
Upon return from university, I was ready to enter the business world and create an impact in my own community. Having travelled to school for so long,I felt that travelling could be made much more easier. That is why today I am the Director of Operations at Skyworld Travel and Tours. This is a shuttle service between Johannesburg, Nelspruit and Swaziland that ensures that you travel comfortably from one city to the next.
Waterford Kamhlaba created a solid foundation for business and leadership. The education I received from the school gave me confidence to explore my skills and take risks. I also learnt to relate to all walks of life which is essential for business.
Learning about the environment and our impact on our communities at WK also inspired me to play my part in a sustainable future. This is how Swazi Organics was founded. It is a manufacturer and distributor of organic farm products such as compost and seedlings.
ADVICE FOR ASPIRING STUDENTS
Be willing to work for free because you never know who you might meet. I worked temporarily at a Grocery Shop in Nashville and I met someone from Smith Barney (US) where I ended up working. You need to understand STEM subjects in this day and age
Start early/small and don’t wait until you have everything because the most important thing is to get started!
Get exposure by watching the Business channel so you can learn acronyms. Get experience because there is much more to finance than theory.
