Davis–UWC Impact Challenge

Waterford Kamhlaba has successfully unlocked $1 million in matched funding, completing the Davis–UWC impact challenge in just 2 years!

American philanthropist Shelby Davis

We join 9 other UWCs that reached this achievement in the first year. The second year of the Davis–UWC IMPACT Challenge has raised over USD $1.5m in matched funding across six UWC schools and colleges. Representing an overall percentage growth in supporters of 46% for the six colleges participating in the second year of the challenge, a 26% increase at Waterford. All of the matched money received from Shelby and Gale Davis will go toward WK’s bursary programme.

Philanthropists Shelby and Gale Davis established the Davis–UWC IMPACT Challenge in 2015. They pledged $15 million to the UWC movement, in the form of matched giving. Today, with 2 more schools being added to the movement, each of the 17 UWCs will benefit from $1 million in matched funding. A college’s eligibility for the match is accessed on the basis of its continual improvement in raising donations from their alumni, parents and friends.

The Davis–UWC IMPACT gift matching initiative seeks to challenge and, at the same time, enable UWC schools and colleges to bring in more funding for scholarships. New gifts from UWC alumni, parents, friends and family are matched at 100% and gifts from existing supporters are matched at 50%. Additionally, the overall increase in the amount donated compared to the previous year is matched 100%. The challenge also benefits programme development, educational and co–curricular innovation, campus enhancements, and other projects which are part of WK’s strategic plan.

“The world needs extraordinary leadership to navigate today’s complex challenges, tensions and conflicts, as well as to make the most of new opportunities. The UWC movement is ideally suited to provide such leaders and we are privileged to support it.”Shelby Davis

During the first year of the challenge, the Waterford community responded in overwhelming support by donating 2.4 MM ZAR (187,000 USD). In matched funding, WK received 3.3 MM ZAR (250,000 USD). An additional 5 scholarships were funded by the match money for the 2017 academic year, with the remaining funds being attributed to scholarships over the next 5 years. At the end of the second year, the WK community out did its previous year’s performance, donating 7.4MM ZAR (565,001 USD at time of conversion). After applying the matching criteria, it was confirmed that WK unlocked the remaining 10.5 MM ZAR (750,000 USD).

In total, combining the amount donated with the matched amount received, in the period from August 1, 2015 to July 31, 2017, WK received an additional 24.6 MM ZAR (1.7 MM USD)!

Students, teachers, and staff at Waterford would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all of you, our parents, past parents, friends, and alumni. Without your efforts and financial support, none of this would have been possible. Over these two “Challenge” years, WK saw an increase in individual donors, going from less than 50 to over 330.

WK has allocated the money donated to renovation and refurbishment projects on campus, modernising and enhancing our physical community to create an environment that better supports the education we provide. All of the matched money received from Shelby and Gale Davis will go toward WK’s bursary programme, ensuring the school’s economic diversity well into the future. A detailed plan will be released of how these funds will be allocated over the coming years.
