Philanthropists Shelby and Gale Davis pledged $15 million to the UWC movement in 2015, in the form of matched giving. Each of the 15 UWCs will benefit from $1 million in matched funding, which is to be accessed on the basis of their continual improvement in raising donations from their alumni, parents and friends.

The purpose of the Davis-UWC Impact Challenge is to increase the support for scholarships at all UWCs. It will also benefit program development, educational and co-curricular innovation, campus enhancements, and other projects which are part of WK’s strategic plan.

Not only will the Davis-UWC Impact Challenge match your gift by 100% if you are a new donor, or 50% if you are a repeat donor, but company matched gifts and Gift Aid (in the UK) will also be matched. This means that each gift can be multiplied many times, delivering an even greater impact.

Now is the perfect time to donate to WK!

The Waterford community picked up the challenge and during the period between August 1, 2015 and July 31, 2016 2.4 MM ZAR (180.000 USD) was donated. In matched funding it is to receive 3.3 MM ZAR (250.000 USD). An additional 5 scholarships will be funded through this support for the 2017 academic year.

“The world needs extraordinary leadership to navigate today’s complex challenges, tensions and conflicts, as well as to make the most of new opportunities. The UWC movement is ideally suited to provide such leaders and we are privileged to support it.” - Shelby Davis

The significance of the Davis-UWC Impact Challenge to WK is immense. This Challenge will allow WK to continue to fund its Bursary Programme, while also allocating money for much needed renovation projects.

Davis-UWC Impact Challenge Q&A

Q. How does WK access the matched funding?

A. A. WK must achieve an overall increase in the number of individual private donors, which include alumni, parents, and other friends of WK, who give between August 1, 2016 and July 31, 2017 as compared to the previous year. 150 alumni and friends gave to WK between August 1, 2015 and July 31, 2016, so between August 1, 2016 and July 31, 2017, WK needs to have a minimum of 151 donors to access the matched funding. WK must continue to increase the total number of individual donors year to year, until it can access the total amount of $1 million. The hope is that WK reaches the total matching amount of this challenge in the next 3 to 5 years.

Q. Who qualifies for the challenge?

A. All gifts made by WK alumni, parents, and friends will be matched. Gifts from corporations or major (non-family) charitable foundations will be excluded.

Q. What does the Davis-UWC Impact Challenge look like in practice?

A. Once WK achieves the first goal of increasing the total number of individual donors, WK will be eligible for 3 different matching schemes. The total match entitlement for each year is calculated by adding the total dollar amount for matches A, B, and C.

Match A

All increases in the overall monetary amounts of donations from alumni, parents and friends compared to the previous year will be matched 100%.

Match B

In addition and cumulative to a), any amounts under USD $250,000 donated by new alumni, parents or friends who have not donated in previous years will be matched 100%. For the purpose of the match this school year, “new donors” are those who have never made a gift or their last gift was on or before July 31, 2013.

Match C

In addition and cumulative to a) and b), any repeat donations under USD $250,000 received from parents, alumni or friends who have donated since July 31, 2013 will be matched 50%.

If there is an increase in the total participation but not in the actual amount donated, WK will be eligible for Match B and C, but not A.

Q. Do existing recurring gifts qualify for the match?

A. Yes. If you have been giving regularly for any amount of time after July 31, 2013, any gift you give after August 1, 2016, will be matched 50%. If you first gave after August 1, 2016 by setting up a recurring gift, the total amount of your gift will be matched 100%.

Q. How do company matching or tax benefits fit into this challenge?

A. Gifts from donors who are successful in matching their donations from outside sources, such as their employer or UK Gift Aid, will be matched the same as the original donation (either Match B or C) plus Match A. For example, if an alumnus’ company matches their first time donation to Waterford of $50 by 100%, the total amount that will be matched as part of the Davis-UWC Impact Challenge will be $100, then with Match B ($100) plus Match A ($100) the total gift available to Waterford becomes $300. You can find a list of companies here, but if you aren’t sure then please ask your company if they are willing to match.
