Waterford Kamhlaba as a United World College
Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa functions as an independent international school,
but is also part of a larger international network - the United World
Colleges. The United World Colleges comprises 13 colleges around the world, all
of which share a common mission and vision:
"UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future "
UWC believes that to achieve peace and a sustainable future, the values it promotes are crucial:
- International and intercultural understanding
- Celebration of difference
- Personal responsibility and integrity
- Mutual responsibility and respect
- Compassion and service
- Respect for the environment
- A sense of idealism
- Personal challenge
- Action and personal example
For more information about United World Colleges' mission and vision, visit www.uwc.org. Eleven of the United World Colleges teach the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB). At Simon Bolivar UWC of Agriculture in Venezuela, students work on a three year Farm Administration diploma.
Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa and the United World College of South East Asia are unique to the UWC movement because they are not just IB diploma schools but also offer lower form education. Click here for the full Academic Programme at Waterford Kamhlaba.
Entry to each UWC is by competitive selection. Scholarship and bursary programmes aim to ensure that the most gifted students are able to attend regardless of their financial circumstances. Governments, foundations, NGO's, companies and former students provide sponsorship. Selection is carried out by UWC Committees in more than 100 countries. More information on the national committees can be found on www.uwc.org. As soon as a student enters a UWC, he or she becomes part of the UWC International Network, which includes almost 20,000 former students and staff, and encourages its members to remain active and true to the ideals upon which the UWC education is built. Waterford also operates a College-based Alumni Association for former WK students and staff.
Community Service and Activities
Community Service has a place of honour at each College, in particular in the International Baccalaureate years where the curriculum includes a comprehensive programme of Creativity, Action and Service (CAS). Through
the shared experience of facing challenges and difficulties in the service
of others, students learn about themselves and develop a sense of responsibility
for others, especially those in need. The programme of each College is
appropriate to the needs of the local community. These may include land
and sea rescue, rural development programmes and work with the disabled,
disadvantaged and socially excluded. Waterford Kamhlaba has an active and extensive
Community Service programme, addressing social issues specific to Swaziland, including HIV/Aids, orphan care, literacy teaching, evironmental projects and housing construction for the most vulnerable.
