Support Us
At Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa, we demonstrate that education changes lives. We believe passionately that more young people must be given access to education of the highest standard to enable them to unlock their potential.
Our fundraising priorities are covered under four broad categories: the African Bursary Fund, Building and Infrastructure Fund, General Fund and Endowment Fund.
Donations of all sizes, made on a one-off basis or regularly, contribute to the vital work of ensuring that Waterford’s success continues into the future.
African Bursary Fund
Through our African Bursary Fund, Waterford Kamhlaba offers disadvantaged African students of ability and potential the opportunity to receive an excellent education. At present, 30% of our students receive bursaries; with more funds, more students will be able to benefit from this scheme.
The backgrounds of students benefitting from our African Bursary Fund reflect current challenges facing the continent: poverty, conflict, HIV/AIDS and a high proportion of orphaned young people.
Waterford Kamhlaba’s earliest ideals of courage, leadership, equality, personal responsibility and academic excellence remain at the school’s core today. Our commitment to the growth and sustainability of our African Bursary Fund reflects our commitment to these values.
Our ambition is to increase the proportion of students receiving bursary support to 50% in time for our 50th anniversary in 2013, but we can only achieve this through the generosity of supporters.
Building and Infrastructure Fund
Many of Waterford Kamhlaba’s buildings date back to the 1960s and are in need of modernisation and maintenance. The school has grown from about 150 students in the late 1960s to almost 600 today, so some facilities need to be expanded or replaced to meet our current needs.
Priority projects for which we require funding include:
- New kitchen and dining hall
- New assembly hall/theatre
- Improved and extended library facilities, including a study area for day students
- Expansion of teaching and study facilities in the IT Centre
- Simple roof for the amphitheatre
- New staff accommodation
- Basic all-weather roof cover for the basketball courts
General Fund
Waterford Kamhlaba’s General Fund is used to finance school projects, purchases and operational requirements.
Current priorities for which we require funding include:
- 30 laptops for use by staff and students across the school
- 10 MacBooks for use by staff and students in the Music, Art and Performance departments
- Darkroom equipment and consumables for our Photography classes and after-school activities
- Audiovisual equipment for classrooms (televisions, DVD players, data projectors, digital recorders)
- Sensors and balances for use in science experiments
- Additional globes and atlases for the Geography department
- New equipment for the Language Lab
Endowment Fund
As we approach our 50th anniversary in 2013, Waterford Kamhlaba is looking to establish an expendable Endowment Fund to ensure our sustainability into the future.
