1963
In 1960 Michael Stern decided to build a school that would educate people of all races. In apartheid South Africa, that was not possible. So he bagan searching around and his search led him to Swaziland, where he met an Irishman, Tom Kelly. Tom Kelly from Waterford, Ireland, lived and mined tin on the Waterford Farm. After selling his ideas, Tom became interested and soon donated his farm.
Class of 1963
Micheal Stern began raising funds in South Africa and the Uk, where he met prominent donors like Christopher Newton Thompson and Harry Openheimer. A Maputo based architech, Pancho Guedes offered his architectural services for free. Work began immediately and the school opened on a rainy day, 3rd February, 1963 with 16 boys and five rondavels.
