Waterford perform well in National Tournament

By Ruddy, IB2

On the 21st of July WK’s under 18 senior soccer squad went down to Mananga College to take part in the annual interschool’s football tournament.

Although not so accustomed to the intense heat and dryness, the WK squad paved its way through to the semi final by knocking down soccer giants; Enjabulweni (0 – 1), Sifundzani (0 – 3), and Sisekelo( 0 – 0). Carrying on with the confidence obtained from the group stages, WK met Bahai in the semi finals, leaving them with a melancholic memory of an intense 1 – 0 victory.

The final was played against the host team, Mananga College and an intense match it was; No goals had been scored until the penalty shoot-outs where WK unfortunately came short due to its fourth penalty shooter rattling the cross-bar and hence leaving WK’s Goal keeper, Tolith vulnerable to the final penalty shot. In short, Mananga became victorious and hence retaining the gold while WK took the silver home with the consolation that they displayed a higher quality of football on the pitch.  To substantiate this point, the player of the tournament, Monroe Van der Brookes, emerged from the WK squad. Hence, apart from a very competitive soccer tournament, WK again reinforced its comradeship with the other independent schools in The Kingdom of Swaziland.
